The Supply of a Child by Dana Johnson

A few years ago, someone asked me, “How do you find all these kids who love God so much and who are amazing ministers, too?” I thought about it, but didn’t have a very clear answer. I knew some of the reasons we were seeing children do awesome things for God, but had not defined the why and the how. It was time to get my Bible and find out for myself. I ended up in John 6.

Jesus had been ministering to a great multitude, miraculously healing the diseased. With the Passover feast approaching, Jesus asked Philip, “Where shall we buy bread to feed this crowd?” After discussing the idea of trying to buy it, Andrew spoke up, letting Jesus know there was a boy with two small fish and five barley loaves.

It’s interesting that Andrew, in mentioning there was a young boy with a small amount of food, stated, “What are they among so many?” Jesus simply replied, “Bring them to Me!” (Matthew 14:18). We know the rest. Jesus gave thanks, broke the loves and had His disciples distribute the food to the crowd. Everyone ate and was filled, and there were even leftovers. (Just think how good the leftovers were the next day!)

I realized something through this amazing story. The supply of a child, although seemingly small, has limitless potential when put in the hands of Jesus. Jesus didn’t even take into account the small supply of food when Andrew asked, “What are they among so many?” He simply used what was available.

The spiritual principle is this: if we can help kids give what they have to Jesus, He will do miraculous things through their supply. Even if it looks insignificant to us, it doesn’t to God.

So what we need to do is find out what children desire to give to God. Allow opportunities for them to give their supply to the Lord. He will do the miraculous as He sees fit, and all who are hungry for God will reap the benefits of a child’s supply being put into the hands of Jesus!

I realize that many times planning and training will be necessary. Appropriate pathways and decisions about platform ministry will need to be in place, but don’t ever discount the insignificant appearance of the supply. Two small fish and five loaves? Sounds like a LOT to God!
